Britt Lundgren is an astronomer specializing in studies of galaxy evolution, the intergalactic medium, and large-scale structure in the Universe. Her research consists of studying:
- the stellar populations and star formation histories of distant galaxies, observed directly through deep space-based infrared imaging, and
- the evolution of the gas and dust content of galaxies and the intergalactic medium throughout cosmic history, as revealed indirectly by absorption features in the optical ground-based spectra of more distant quasars.
After completing her Ph.D., Britt worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Yale University and later as a National Science Foundation Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In the year prior to joining the UNC Asheville faculty, Britt held a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowship in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation. In this role she worked with numerous Federal science agencies on projects aiming to increase participation, diversity, and outcomes for students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
As an Assistant Professor in UNC Asheville’s Department of Physics, Britt is continuing her active research programs, which rely on data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the ground-based Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Britt is also currently serving as the Co-Chair for Education and Public Outreach for the fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV).
