The Department has modern lab facilities in modern physics, optics, lasers, nuclear physics, molecular physics, and electronics. All majors give presentations to the Department in their upper-level lab courses.
UNC Asheville’s Lookout Observatory is dedicated to helping students and community members of all ages and interest levels understand and enjoy astronomy. UNC Asheville and the Astronomy Club of Asheville regularly offer free events at the observatory that are open to the public, as well as scheduled visits for schools and other organized groups. Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI)
UNC Asheville has a history of partnering with the nearby Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI). Students have benefitted from hands-on opportunities in radio astronomy at this facility, which was formerly used by NASA and later by the United States Department of Defense. The multi-million dollar PARI facility is located in Rosman, NC, about a 45-minute drive from UNC Asheville.
