The Department has modern lab facilities in modern physics, optics, lasers, nuclear physics, molecular physics, and electronics. All majors give presentations to the Department in their upper-level lab courses.
UNC Asheville’s Lookout Observatory host four permanently mounted telescopes including two 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain reflectors. UNCA students regular use these telescopes combined with specialized cameras and a spectrograph to conduct research projects both as part of our Astronomy Minor and independently. Beyond our student research Lookout Observatory is dedicated to helping community members of all ages and interest levels understand and enjoy astronomy. UNC Asheville and the Astronomy Club of Asheville regularly offer free events at the observatory that are open to the public, as well as scheduled visits for schools and other organized groups.
